PSLING ORIGIN / BRAND HISTORY

From PsLing to PSNY.
Twenty-five years with textiles.

PSNY began with a single textile used to carry a baby: babywearing cultures encountered abroad, a small Tokyo atelier, expansion to New York, and eventually new forms for cloth after its original role. The ideas and handwork developed through PsLing continue in PSNY today.

Encountering cultures that carry babies in a single textile

ORIGIN

The origin: babywearing cultures
encountered abroad.

In the 1990s, work in international development brought encounters with mothers carrying babies in a single piece of cloth. It was more than a childcare product: it was knowledge that allowed parent and child to stay naturally close in daily life. Recognizing the essence of carrying in that simple method became the origin of PsLing.

BEGINNING

Making that began
in a small atelier

After returning to Japan, the idea took shape as a textile in a small Tokyo atelier. Handmade baby slings went on sale in 2000, followed by online sales in 2001, when the word “sling” was still unfamiliar in Japan. Listening to users, we refined the material, rings, length, and sewing one element at a time.

CRAFT

What never changed:
making by hand

Even as places and lifestyles changed, the essentials remained: seeing each textile, reading its texture and pattern, sewing, and shaping it. Because it held a baby, efficiency alone was never the priority. That respect for touch and comfort continues in PSNY making and Re-craft.

NEW YORK

From Tokyo
to New York

PSLING NEW YORK CORPORATION was established in 2005, followed by a directly operated store in Manhattan’s SoHo district in 2006. The proposal—beautiful babywearing shaped by Japanese textiles and handwork—expanded PsLing’s presence as a Japanese baby-sling brand.

FROM PSLING TO PSNY

From a textile for carrying
to one that lives its next chapter.

PsLing offered more than a baby carrier. The pleasure of choosing cloth, the comfort of wearing it, and time spent close together all became part of the textile. When a child grew and the sling’s role ended, the textile and memories remained. Re-craft work begun in 2012 brought such cloth back into daily life. PSNY now carries forward that eye for textiles, handwork, and dialogue through stoles, clothing, and small goods.
